AVOIDING THE TEN FATAL ERRORS According to The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Foundation, there were 160 Law Enforcement Officers Killed-In-The Line-of-Duty in 1997. From time to time, especially when we are faced with these harsh realities, it is important we review the Ten Fatal Errors that have killed experienced Lawmen. Perhaps one of them may make a lifesaving difference one day for you !! ATTITUDE - If you fail to keep your mind on the job or you carry personal problems into the field you will make errors. It can cost you or fellow officers their lives. TOMBSTONE COURAGE - No one doubts that you have courage. But in any situation where time allows - WAIT for the backup. There are few instances where alone, unaided you should try and make a dangerous apprehension. NOT ENOUGH REST -- To do your job you must be alert. Being sleepy or asleep on the job is not only against regulations, but you endanger yourself, the community and all your fellow officers. TAKING A BAD POSITION -- Never let anyone you are questioning or detaining manipulate you into a position of disadvantage. Always be aware of position. Maintain the advantage. There is no such thing as a routine arrest or stop. DANGER SIGNS -- As an officer you should recognize "danger signs." Fast movement and strange cars are warnings that should alert you to watch and approach with caution. Know your community and watch for what looks to be "out of place." FAILURE TO WATCH THE HANDS OF A SUSPECT -- Is he reaching for a weapon or getting ready to strike you ? How else can a potential killer strike but with his hands ? RELAXING TOO SOON -- Observe carefully. Are you certain the crisis is over. Don't be quick to relax simply because the immediate and apparent threat has been neutralized. IMPROPER USE OR NO HANDCUFFS -- See that the hand that can kill is safely cuffed. Once you have made an arrest, handcuff the prisoner immediately and properly. NO SEARCH OR POOR SEARCH -- There are so many places to hide weapons that your failure to search is a crime against fellow officers. Many criminals carry several weapons and are prepared to use them against you. DIRTY OR INOPERATIVE WEAPON -- Are your weapons clean ? Will they Fire ? How about the Ammunition ? When did you last fire so that you can hit a target in combat conditions ? What's the sense of carrying any firearm that may not work when you need it the most ? THE LESSON
